Tutorial: how to make vintage lace flowers...

Is it possible to have too much lace?

(The one below looks small- it's not, it's huge!)

*Scoff* No way!
But when one does have so much lace, one should find projects to do with it. I don't know if everyone already knows how to do this but I can't find any tutorials for it on the web. I wanted to make some pretty flowers for little clippies but quickly realised they could be used for anything. I used the same sort of idea as a tutorial I saw on how to make duck tape roses...

For this project you will need:

1. Vintage lace- I'm using a double lace I found at the op shop today.

2. A hot glue gun

Start off by putting a small dot of glue on the end you want to be the middle of the flower.

Fold the end over so it sticks

Using the glue, double the lace over so it sticks there, as in the photo above.

Continue around the middle gluing it back on itself every centimeter or so, like above. Try not to use too much glue but make sure it can't come apart.

After doing this for a little while your flower will start to look like this.

Continue to go around the edge doubling back all the time.

Keep flipping your flower over to make sure it looks right.

Eventually the back will start to flatten out as you go around, the flower will spread out more.

Once you've decided your flower is as big as you want, cut off the lace and glue it down.
Tada! Pretty vintage lace flower.
There are heaps of different sorts of lace and they all turn out differently...

The blue and purple ones above are ribbons, if you use ribbon double it back more often than with the lace because it wont spread itself out like the lace does. The same goes for lace that isn't already ruffled like this one below. This one was actually a very wide piece of lace so I folded it over and went around on the fold, it turned out really well, with more volume.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Have fun and I'd like to see what you come up with if you make some! Enjoy!

These are very sweet! I did a project a few years ago with kids where we used essentially the same technique only with strips of tulle (which is 1000 times cheaper than vintage lace when you're making 100 of these things with 8 year olds.) Instead of using glue, we first sewed a running stitch down the whole thing and gathered it a bit, then coiled it together and sewed. This gave the tulle the same sort of ruffley look your lace has, and it works for ribbon/fabric/whatever too.

This is such a great idea! I have tons of old lace and trims all stashed away waiting for a project just like this. I posted a link to your tutorial on Craft Gossip Sewing Blog:

This looks really pretty with easy to do steps too. Moms who have babies can also do this as a hobby. A woman having a child with Paxil birth defects can also make use of this as a way to relax and decorate her baby's crib.
